4/11/2024 Good afternoon parents, students, and staff. This is a reminder to you all that there is NO SCHOOL next Monday the 15th of April. This is an extra day built into the schedule in case we had to cancel school for weather. Usually referred to as “snow days.” I think perhaps I did not communicate the reasons behind embedding them into the school year very well, so I am hoping to share the rationale with you all to at least clear up the confusion as to the “why.” There are several reasons for doing it the way they are scheduled this year. Though some may not agree fully, I hope you all can at least see that the decision was made with student and staff well-being, mental health, and the learning environment in mind. First, many of us have done snow days in a variety of ways both here and in other districts. We have lived through some of the pitfalls that go along with each method. The decision to embed the snow days into the school year this year was for a few key reasons. First, having a predictable end date is important. Those last few days of school do require advance planning and preparation, and they do affect everyone significantly. In the last several years, we have had to scramble to add days to the calendar because of school cancellations, and it really makes the end of the year hectic for everyone. That said, having a predictable end date is really important for planning for not just teachers and students, but also food service, summer cleaning and maintenance scheduling, etc. So having that predictable end date is more important than it may seem. In addition to that, this year for instance, if we ended the student days on the Friday before Memorial Day, the teachers still have to come back for a full day after the three-day weekend, which is pretty challenging for our staff. Our calendar, while keeping students first in all decisions, does also affect our staff, and they must be considered as well. Getting the school year to end on a day that makes sense for everyone is more challenging than many might think, so scheduling the way we did lets us have a little more control in the process to ensure a smooth end to the year for everyone. Finally, and I would say most importantly, the last few months of school are a grind on staff and students alike. By the time we reach the end of the school year, often times tempers are short and attitudes are not in the best shape either. So a few well-timed three-day weekends could potentially go a very long way in keeping everyone in good spirits through the rest of the school year. A few more days of summer really does not produce any benefits to the mental health of our staff and students, nor any benefits to the learning environment. Conversely, a few spaced out three-day weekends near the end, could be just what our staff and students need to get through the school year with good attitudes and smiles, which does improve the learning environment. Again, some may not fully agree, but I hope you can see that thought and purpose did actually go into this decision, with the well-being of our students and staff being the primary driver of the decision.
