The PHS Knowledge Bowl team came home as the Big Horn Basin Knowledge Bowl champions. This is the first time in school history that Powell High School has won the competition. The traveling trophy dates back to 1982 and Powell is not listed as a winner. The Board recognized Powell – Team 1 (Champions) – Audrey Johnson, Curtis Muecke, and Colin Walker. Not pictured are team members Natalie Black and Katarina Reitz. Fifth-grade students from Mrs. Landwehr’s class showcased their proficiency in meeting the requirements for The Great American Award Challenge at the February 11 Board meeting. Students must meet six requirements to receive the award: 1. Recite the Gettysburg Address from memory. 2. Recite the full names of all 46 (now 47) presidents in order from memory. 3. Locate AND spell correctly the 50 states and capitals on a map. 4. Recite or sing our National Anthem, "The Star Spangled Banner," by heart. 5. Recite the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States from memory. 6. Write the Pledge of Allegiance with correct spelling, capitals, and punctuation. So far this year, six of Mrs. Landwehr’s Southsiders have completed the challenge. Five students, along with Mrs. Landwehr attended the meeting. After Mrs. Landwehr explained the Challenge, each student recited a portion of the six tasks, except for the Pledge, which the board members and attendees had already recited together. Students have until May 1st to complete the challenge, and each student who successfully fulfills the requirements will receive a trophy at the end of the school year. Way to shine, Southsiders!
